Instructions and Rules regarding the SMXF Instrument
Time Request System
Instructions:
- Access
the SMXF Instrument Time Request System (SITRS) at http://crystals.ucsd.edu/scheduling/.
- Use
your own login and password to enter SITRS.
- Sign
up for a time and date you would like to begin your experiment by clicking
on an open slot for an instrument.
- Request
only 1 hour of time to begin with (regardless of your experiment to screen
your sample) by clicking on the same time slot clicked in the previous
step.
- Click
the Sign-up button and your request will be submitted. Keep in mind that this is only a request
and your start time may be shifted by upwards of 24 hours depending on the
ending time of the previous experiment, required instrument maintenance,
etc.
- Once
your request is approved and scheduled you will receive an automated
e-mail from SITRS. You will also
receive an automated e-mail if any changes are made to your request to
keep you informed of when the instrument will be available for your experiment.
- When
it’s your turn, screen your crystal and begin your data collection. Once the data collection is in progress,
log back in to SITRS and update the end time for your block according to
the length of your experiment. Overnight
data collections that end on weekdays should be setup to end by 8:00 AM
the next day. If your screening was
unsuccessful or if you were only performing a unit cell determination, you
do not have to update your end time on SITRS. Data collections longer than 24 hours
will be assessed a LN2 surcharge of $50 for each 12 hour period
beyond the initial 24 hours.
- On
weekends, it is your responsibility to turn off the low temperature device
if no one is scheduled after you. Always
leave the low temperature device on during the week.
Who can use this system?
UCSD Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry graduate
students who have successfully completed and passed Prof. Rheingold’s Practical
X-ray Crystallography course are eligible to obtain their own login and
password for the SMXF Instrument Time Request System (SITRS). Post-docs and other faculty who have
demonstrated their proficiency in X-ray crystallography and use of the
instrumentation may also obtain their own login and password for SITRS. Undergraduates may not obtain their own login
and password as they are not permitted to operate any diffractometer with out
the direct supervision of a trained graduate student, post-doc or faculty
member.
How do I obtain a login and password?
Please send an e-mail to Dr. DiPasquale at adipasqu@ucsd.edu requesting access to
SITRS.
